The work that I have done has shown that there are other alternative methods for making stem cell lines, rather than using embryos. People used to say it was impossible, but I and other scientists have not as I use eggs rather than embryos to make embryonic stem cells, so I don’t have to destroy embryos unnecessarily!

Change the views of other scientists – yes. For example, my colleagues and I have found species at undersea volcanoes around Antarctica that are not what other scientists were expecting. That’s making us change our views about the patterns of life in the oceans.

But change the views of people about something other than part of science? No. At least not yet! But maybe we will. I’d like to change people’s views about our planet, so that they realise most of it has actually *not* been explored yet!

I don’t think I’ve made any discoveries that would alter the way we as a society think about something. But some of my work has changed the views of other physicists, and maybe one day I’ll make a real breakthrough that will make a wider impact – who knows!
