      understanding the world observing it, playing with it a bit, and making better and better theories.

      [ Bizarrely this is a revolutionary idea. Plato, the most famous greek philosopher, said that in order to understand the stars, the last thing you should do is look up into the sky. You should just sit and think about what they should look like in a perfect universe. Christian thought in europe followed similar lines, arguing that it was a waste of time to observe the world or speculate about it, it is simply what God wants it to be. It was only about 400 years ago that we started to systematically observe, experiment and learn about the universe ]
