I’m willing to bet that you’re not actually bad at science. Science is really about asking questions – and you’re doing great at that here. Maybe you think you don’t well in tests or exams, or enjoy writing stuff up – but that doesn’t mean you’re bad at science.

So I have a suggestion. From your other questions, I’m guessing that music is something that is important to you. If you do enjoy music, then why not set yourself a personal challenge to find out about the science of music? For example, what is sound, and why do different notes sound different to our ears? And how does a guitar, or amplifier, or synthesiser work? You could use the internet to do some research about it, and ask some scientists too (just like you’ve done here – and after “I’m a Scientist” ends, there are other websites like http://www.askascientist.org/ and http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/aas.htm ).

If you pick something that really interests you, and find out more about the science behind it (and there’s science behind everything, because science can tell us more about anything), then I think that along the way you’ll learn a lot about the physics, biology and so on that are in your lessons. But it will be much more fun, because you’re using it to find out more about something that you enjoy. Ok, it will involve some extra effort, but I guarantee you won’t regret it!

I wouldn’t worry too much, you are probably not as bad as you think!! There are so many different types of science, I am sure that there will be some aspects you will be good at! Even if you don’t end up pursuing a science career, it does not mean you can’t still be interested in science. Science is all around us, and most of the time it’s really unlike what you learn in school so don’t be put off. Helping the environment by saving energy is something scientific that everyone can do, and just being interested in your own health and well being and knowing how to look after your body is also science. I felt I was not very good at Maths and Physics at school, but I still tried my best and managed to get on ok, as I just concentrated on the parts of science I did like!

Have you enjoyed being on this site and taking part in IAS? if you have, then that is great, and by asking us a question, and voting, shows you are interested and involved so that is great and hopefully you have learned some new things! Some of these things may help in your science lessons so hopefully you don’t feel that you are bad at it any more!! There are lots of links on this site as well so you can find out more about science, which will increase your knowledge, making you a science star!!

I’d say don’t give up, and remember, just because you might not be as “good” at something as other things does not mean you still can’t enjoy it!! Do whatever makes you feel happy!! Good luck!

Don’t despair, and don’t give up! Sometimes things take a while to click. If you’re really interested in science there are lots of popular science books out there that are really good (and maybe more interesting than school science lessons but don’t tell your teacher I said that!). Science is a challenge though (that’s why I like it so much) but it is definitely worth the effort!

      Good luck! 😀
