Well, I’d get my lifejacket on, put myself into the brace position, and keep my fingers crossed that we crash landed safely!!! I’m quite scared of flying so your question has made me even more nervous!!!
I don’t think there is much that you can do – your life is in the hands of the pilot, and whether the situation and their skill allows them to make a crash-landing, as opposed to a crash.
But if I have a choice, I prefer to sit at the back of the plane when I fly, because that’s where you may be more likely to survive if there is a crash. Here’s an article about where people sat who survived crashes:
Other than that, I’d suggest trying to keep calm, and getting ready for action. Once the plane has stopped moving, whether you’ve come down on land or water, everyone will need to evacuate quickly, and you may need to help people who can’t help themselves.
But it’s important to remember that air crashes are fortunately very rare. I used to really hate flying (and I wouldn’t say I “enjoy” it now either!). But to get over that, I just think about all the thousands of planes that are flying across the world every day, without any incidents. Comparing the number of fatal accidents per mile travelled by air and by car, I think you’re something like thirty times more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash. But both are fortunately rare, so try not to worry!
