Seeing things that no-one has ever seen before. There are six billion people on Earth, and we’ve had ten thousand years or so of recorded history, so its an amazing feeling and priviledge to realise that you’re the first person ever to see the underwater landscape where we’re exploring, or the new species of deep-sea creatures that we find. It makes me realise what an amazing world we live in, and how much I appreciate having the opportunity to explore it in my lifetime.

When you’ve been working on something for ages trying to understand it and then you finally do! I get a real buzz from that, especially if it’s something no-one else understands. It makes all the hard work worth it!

I love doing experiments, especially looking at my cells under the microscope, I spend a lot of my day doing that. It’s really exciting when you discover something new for the first time!!! I also like teaching other people how to do things, like the students in my Lab.
